The Portrait Style Guide: What to Wear and How to Prepare
Your portrait session is about capturing who you are right now. This guide covers wardrobe, grooming, and preparation so you arrive confident and leave with images you love.
Wardrobe Foundations
Bring 2-3 outfits. Variety is the single best way to get more from your session. Include one casual look, one dressed-up option, and one outfit that feels most "you."
Solids over patterns. Solid colors keep the focus on your face. If you love pattern, bring it as a second option — but start with solids.
Texture photographs beautifully. Linen, knits, denim, silk, and cotton all read differently on camera. Mixing textures adds visual interest without the distraction of pattern.
Fit is everything. Clothes that fit well make you look polished. Avoid anything too tight (creates lines) or too loose (adds volume). When in doubt, choose the tailored option.
Color Guide
The camera loves: navy, burgundy, forest green, charcoal, cream, rust, dusty blue, and soft pink. These tones complement most skin tones and photograph richly.
Use caution with: bright white (competes with your face), neon colors (casts on skin), and solid black (can look flat without texture).
For Signature Series Clients
Our Signature Series sessions include professional hair and makeup. Arrive with clean, product-free skin and dry hair. Bring reference images if you have a specific look in mind — your stylist will work with you to adapt it to your features.
The Day Before
Hydrate well. Get a full night's sleep. Lay out all your outfits and steam or iron everything. Charge your phone. And most importantly — don't overthink it. We'll guide you through every step once you arrive.
