What to Bring for Your Beach Shoot
What to Pack for Your Beach Photography Session
A little preparation goes a long way. Here's exactly what to bring to your South Florida beach session so you're comfortable, confident, and ready for stunning photos.
The Essentials
Water. This is non-negotiable. South Florida heat is real, and even a 30-minute session can leave you dehydrated. Bring at least one bottle per person — more for longer sessions.
Towel. Bring a dark-colored towel (navy or charcoal photographs best if it sneaks into a shot). You'll want it for drying off after wading into the surf, wiping sand from feet, and blotting any perspiration between setups.
Sunscreen. Apply at least 20 minutes before your session so it's fully absorbed. Choose a matte-finish, non-greasy formula — shiny skin creates hotspots in photos. Avoid spray sunscreens right before shooting; they can leave a visible film.
What to Wear
Flowing fabrics. Maxi dresses, lightweight linens, and breathable materials that move with the ocean breeze create dynamic, editorial-looking images. Avoid stiff, structured fabrics that don't catch the wind.
Coordinate, don't match. For groups and families, choose 2-3 complementary colors rather than identical outfits. Earth tones, soft blues, creams, and coral shades look natural against sand and water.
Footwear that makes sense. Barefoot is best on the sand — bring sandals or flip-flops for walking between spots and on hot pavement. Leave the heels at home unless we're shooting on a boardwalk.
The Extras That Make a Difference
A change of clothes. Even one extra top gives you variety in your gallery. Casual plus dressy covers both vibes in a single session.
Hair ties and clips. Beach wind is unpredictable. Bring options to pull hair back or let it down depending on conditions.
Lip balm and powder. Minimal touch-up items go a long way. A quick blot before a new setup keeps you looking fresh.
Sunglasses. Bring them. We'll use them as a prop for a few frames, then take them off for the majority of the session.
A small bag or tote. Something easy to carry that fits everything above. You won't want to juggle loose items between locations.
What to Leave Behind
- Heavy makeup — natural looks photograph best in golden hour light
- Large bags or purses — there's nowhere secure to leave them on the beach
- Anything you'd be upset about getting sandy or damp
